Short answer
Your location, the country where your TV account is registered and your plan determine what is available while travelling. A player installed on your phone does not extend those rights. Check your route before leaving, and distinguish a temporary holiday from a permanent move.
Account
Record provider, registration country and plan.
Destination
Check country, trip length and the features you need.
Device
Install the app at home; test playback and data use.
Translating this article does not change account country or content rights.
Five details make up your travel check
Make a note of your provider, account country, plan, destination and trip length. Add the device you will actually use. Without these details, “Will my TV work abroad?” cannot be answered reliably.
German and Swiss accounts for the same service may have different rights. An app in German also does not tell you which country holds the account. Check the contract account, not only the menu language.
Also note what you need: live channels, Replay, recordings or previously downloaded content. A service may permit one feature while travelling and not another. A general “abroad” checkmark is too broad for this decision.
What EU portability generally means
The EU consumer information on portability explains that paid online content services are generally accessible during a temporary stay in another EU country under the conditions of the country of residence. For free offers, participation is optional for providers.
This is not blanket approval for worldwide use or a permanent move. Under certain conditions, providers may verify your country of residence. Actual playback quality also depends on your connection.
Keep this separate from mobile roaming: the TV service decides content access; your mobile plan determines usable data and possible charges. An available channel can still use substantial data.
Example: Zattoo results depend on the account country
The current Zattoo travel help explicitly distinguishes regions of use. Checked on 23 October 2026.
| Starting point | Travel route described by provider |
|---|---|
| Paid German account | Temporary use in the EU and additional listed areas, including Norway and Iceland |
| Paid account (AT) | Temporary use within the EU |
| Paid Swiss account | Recordings abroad; no live TV, Replay, Restart or On-Demand |
| Free account | No use abroad |
Zattoo also lists a maximum of 90 days per trip, app download at home and other requirements. This is that service’s published rule, not a general legal trip length for all subscriptions. Read the full terms for your plan before departure. Recheck the provider help for another country or a later plan version.
What to prepare at home
Install the official app and test sign-in and playback on the travel device. Make sure you can use your regular sign-in method away from home too. A TV working at home does not prove that a tablet will sign in successfully.
Ask the provider about the specific channel and feature at your destination. For sports, check the exact package rather than a general TV logo. For recordings, note deletion dates and test playback on your travel device. The recording guide explains cloud versus download.
With TELOS, you need your own permitted source and a supported device version. If your source does not allow an external player abroad, TELOS cannot grant that permission. Prepare eligible offline content only through an explicitly supported download route.
If a stream will not start at your destination
Classify the message: a location notice differs from a failed sign-in or repeated buffering. Record its exact wording without private access details. First check that your account country, plan and destination match the terms.
If the region is detected incorrectly, follow Zattoo’s help for location messages if you use that service. It lists VPN, proxy and Private Relay among possible causes of unclear location detection. Turning these off is a diagnostic for ordinary access, not a way to bypass a restriction.
For buffering without a location notice, check the connection on the travel device. Hotel Wi-Fi may have sign-in pages or technical restrictions. Test another permitted connection and consider its cost. The buffering guide helps separate source and network issues.
Plan holidays, motorhomes and moving separately
Motorhome use adds reception, power and data planning. Use the hotspot guide. These technical checks matter even after content rights are settled.
For a permanent move, ask the service how to change your account and what is available at the new address. Prices, channels and features may change. Repeatedly extending a holiday assumption is not a reliable basis for permanent viewing.
Before leaving, save the terms you checked and the official support route. If something fails, you can then explain the exact combination you tested instead of buying more subscriptions or players on a guess.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use any German TV subscription worldwide?
No. Check the provider, account country, plan, destination and length of stay. Temporary EU portability is not worldwide or permanent permission.
Does TELOS change the country rights of my source?
No. TELOS is a player. Your content source sets regional availability and permitted use.
Does the 90-day figure apply to every service?
No. It is a specific figure in Zattoo’s provider help, not a general limit for all streaming subscriptions.
Are TV portability and data roaming the same?
No. One concerns content access; the other concerns your mobile plan, data use and possible charges.
