A channel list, programme data and a provider login do different jobs. Keeping them separate makes it easier to set up an M3U player.

Set up an M3U player: understand playlists, EPG and Xtream

What to know before opening a playlist

An M3U player reads references to media. It does not buy channel rights or unlock a content subscription. You need a source you are entitled to use that provides access for a compatible independent player. An ordinary streaming account with an email address and password is not automatically suitable. Before buying, ask which access format is explicitly supported.

TELOS does not include channels, films or content subscriptions. What is available and reachable depends on your own access. Successfully importing a list initially means only that its entries are available. Whether a particular stream starts, the programme guide appears or a download is possible must be checked separately.

M3U, XMLTV and Xtream: three different jobs

M3U describes the media selection

An M3U list can contain names and addresses for channels or other media. You might receive it as a file or private web address. A saved file can become outdated; a web address may let the provider deliver an updated list. However, a link does not guarantee that every stream in it will remain reachable.

M3U8 refers to a UTF-8 variant, but it can also appear in connection with a single HLS stream. The file extension alone does not tell you whether it is a channel list or a technical playlist of media segments. RFC 8216 on HTTP Live Streaming explains how HLS uses such playlists. An M3U8 address found online is therefore not necessarily a complete provider login.

XMLTV supplies programme information

An EPG is the visible programme guide. XMLTV is a data format that describes, among other things, channel identifiers and programmes with their times. The XMLTV project format definition documents the links between channels and programmes. The programme data must match the channel selection. If the data cannot be reached or mapped correctly, the guide may be empty even while live TV works.

Xtream connects a provider account

With Xtream access, you enter a server address, username and password. The provider must explicitly supply this access. This format is not the same as an M3U file or an XMLTV link. If both methods are offered, your choice also depends on the features available on your platform. The Xtream guide explains this connection method in more detail.

What limits apply to TELOS on your device?

Primary information is available on the product pages for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Fire TV. XMLTV support for M3U on iPhone and iPad is not a blanket feature claim for every TELOS platform. Available Android phone apps do not prove an Android TV release either. Check the current platform status for other devices.

Set up and check an M3U link safely

  1. Confirm the source: Ask the provider to confirm that you may use your access in an independent player. Also check the connection limit and expiry date.
  2. Check the format: The TELOS route described here requires a complete M3U link. Importing a file is not promised on every platform. If you only have a file, ask which import route is supported.
  3. Copy the link exactly: Watch for extra spaces or missing characters. Do not remove parameters or try to derive Xtream details from the link.
  4. Test basic playback: Open a familiar channel, then a second one. Note whether the list is missing, one stream fails or all streams are affected.
  5. Organise only afterwards: Add favourites and use the available categories. If you have several sources, privately note which list belongs to which provider.

Treat the complete playlist address like a password. It may contain access details even if you do not see a login screen. Do not upload it to third-party checking sites or post screenshots showing it. If it is exposed, ask the provider to disable or replace it; deleting a public post alone does not revoke access that may already have been copied.

Check XMLTV separately on iPhone and iPad

The XMLTV address may be provided in the source details or in a url-tvg entry in the list. TELOS retrieves the data the first time you open the EPG. If there is no matching address, the data cannot be reached or the channels are not mapped correctly, a working channel alone will not fill the guide. Ask for a current XMLTV source for your exact list.

Catch-up means watching past programmes; it is not part of a basic programme guide. The M3U route described in the Apple app does not support it. The EPG guide and Apple setup guide cover the next relevant steps.

Trace the fault to the right place

If the whole list fails to load, compare the saved link privately with the provider’s original and check whether access is still valid. If the list loads but one channel fails, try a second. If playback stutters, use the buffering check with individual comparisons. Do not replace the link, app and network at the same time.

For support, start with the device model, app version, access format, affected step and error message, without sharing secrets. A successful M3U import proves neither extra features nor the provider’s rights. Keeping these checks separate saves you from looking for an EPG fix when only one channel is unreachable.

Frequently asked questions

Is M3U the same as Xtream?

No. M3U describes a media list; Xtream connects to access supplied by a provider using a server, username and password.

Can TELOS show an EPG with M3U?

On iPhone and iPad, TELOS supports XMLTV with M3U. A matching, reachable data source and correct channel mapping are still required.

Does an EPG mean catch-up will work too?

No. Programme information and archive playback are separate features. M3U catch-up is not supported in the Apple app described here.

Can I download from an M3U source in TELOS?

Not on the Apple devices described here. Downloads require Xtream and other conditions; Apple TV also has temporary-storage limits.

Does every legal streaming subscription work in an M3U player?

No. The provider must offer a compatible access method and allow its use. An ordinary app login alone is not enough.
